There aren’t many more diverse cities in the United Kingdom than Birmingham, and that is evident from the musicians that have come out of the second city. The famous city has created a number of global stars in modern history, but potentially none are bigger than Ozzy Osbourne. But, which other famous bands made a name for themselves in Birmingham before going on to achieve international success?
The Street were established in 1994 but didn’t become international stars in the United Kingdom until the release of their debut studio album ‘Original Pirate Material’ in 2002. Birmingham-based Mike Skinner from The Streets was the driving force behind the success that was achieved by the group. Skinner, along with Kevin Mark Trail, Rob Harvey and Wayne Bennett made up the group.
The debut album went on to be named in the top 100 albums of all-time by NME, while future studio releases titled ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ and ‘The Hardest Way To Make an East Living’ also saw the popularity of the group increase. The group also released ‘Everything is Borrowed’ in 2008 and the ‘Computers And Blues’ in 2010 before separating to focus on other projects.
UB40 are one of the most synonymous groups in the history of British music. The group rose to prominence in the 1980s, as they were awarded for a Grammy for the Best Reggae Album. UB40 remain prominent in the industry today, and have been praised for the diverse line-up that have made up the group throughout its history.
The group have sold over 70 millions records around the world. The main period of success for the group came during the 90s, with the releases of ‘Labour of Love’ and ‘Promises and Lies’. The line-up of the group has changed more regularly over the past 20 years. Ali Campbell was the front man for the group between 1979 and 2008, before two of the other main members of the group quickly departed too. The group now consists of Jimmy Brown, Robin Campbell and Earl Falconer.
Duran Duran are one of the most famous bands to have been born in the second city. The group were formed in 1978, and quickly became a driving force in the increased popularity of British music in the United States. Throughout the 80s, the groups popularly continued. They were one of the groups whose popularity was able to grow with the developments made when it came to creating music videos.
That coupled with the establishment of MTV meant that greater emphasis was put on the music videos that were recorded. Duran Duran remain one of the best-selling music artists of all-time, as they have sold over 100 million records globally. As well as that, they have won two Grammy’s, and the group also had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
