Tumble Audio are renowned for their no nonsense approach to releasing raw, upfront and pretty brazen club music, and their latest transmission sees Glasgow’s Nativ run riot across three original tracks.
Despite ‘Shifty’ marking his debut for the label, it’s no surprise that there’s little room for gentle introductions as things kick off at a rude and fairly frantic pace. Tentatively branded ‘dark house’ by some, ‘Shifty’ blends super rude, Championesque basslines with meticulously worked percussion and those nostalgic, Napa ’07 Funky drums we all still secretly love. With totally unabashed, unerringly confident swagger ‘Shifty’is an absolute stormer.
‘I Want You’ works a similar formula, although it rolls along at a more rigid pace, the sub bass cutting through percussive sways perfectly amidst the rehashed samples and charging drums.’Dizzy’ meanwile, does exactly what it says on the tin, packing those trademark minimalist dark, Funky rhythms not too dissimilar from that of the title track. Backed by everyone from My Nu Leng to EZ, it’s fair to say they’re tracks capable of slaying most dance floors.
On remix duties, Arctic, who seems equally adept at churning out murky, throwback Grime as he is at championing weird, wonderful and bleepy 4×4, gives ‘Shifty’ a thoroughly engaging rework that dances around the sheer bullishness of the original, whilst Jook 10 goes all out dungeon with his snarling, Dub-edged edit.
Not so much one for connoisseurs but certainly an EP for those who like their music loud, proud and to sound tough as f**k in the rave.
