Go behind the scenes with Actress on his new Stockhausen inspired opera project

Watch Actress talk through the process of his reimagining of Stockhausen’s Welt-Parlament.

May 14th will see the the Royal Festival Hall plays host to the world premiere of Actress x Stockhausen Sin {x} II, a new electronic opera piece from the mind of Actress (Darren J. Cunningham) and his artificial intelligence project, Young Paint.

Co-commissioned by Southbank Centre and Holland Festival, this new composition for choir, AI, piano and electronics sees Actress present his reimagining of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Welt-Parlament (1995), which depicted members of a fictional parliament in the sky discuss the meaning of love.

Speaking on his choice, Actress states that he “wanted to appeal to people who may be new to his music, give them an entry point. But I also wanted to connect it to the current political climate. I chose ‘Welt-Parliament’ because I saw a doorway; if you were able to just ask a simple question to actual members of parliament then the libretto will essentially create itself for this new piece. The question was very simply: ‘what is love to you?’”

Actress x Stockhausen Sin {x} II takes place on May 14th at the Southbank Centre.
