Soul-drenched vocals in a broken-beat soundscape.
Visceral yet perceptive, powerful and euphoric; Black Square sets the tone for his upcoming second album, ‘Beggars Opera’, with the first single ‘Coral Blues’, an explosive collaboration with Laville of Acid Jazz Records.
Black Square’s hypnotic psychedelic drum swirls and scattered rhythms bring to mind a ’90s Jungle 12” played on 33rpm instead of 45. There is something almost other-wordly in the way Laville’s soulful vocals echo over the beat, paired with a recurring percussive bass motif that defines the song, ‘Coral Blues’ is nothing short of eclectic.
Hailing from the UK, the Brighton-based producer serves us his first release via Blind Colour, an emerging independent label that boasts a myriad of electronic and downtempo talents. An amalgamation of sophisticated, raw lyrics in a sonically profound broken-beat landscape this single is sure to elevate with its supporting dancefloor-friendly remixes from Throwing Snow and Phaeleh, followed by a provocative video produced by Friend London, known for their award-winning work for Childish Gambino, Charli XCX and Bonobo – to name a few.
Coral Blues is out now, preceded by the full album, Beggar’s Opera on 17th April.
