With production its often not so much what is done, but rather how its done. Hailing for Derry, Northern Ireland, Andrew Morrison’s output thus far has featured many recognisable sonic motifs and familiar flourishes. What distinguishes his work then is its unique composition, and distant, unknowable quality. For every knowing nod to the iridescent lead lines of early Hardcore or the louche unqantized gait of instrumental Hip-Hop, there’s a dense swathe of tape hiss or a burnt out blanket of distortion separating his music from any easy comparisons.
His singular aesthetic made him a good fit for Brainfeeder affiliate MatthewDavid’s Leaving Records – with 2013’s ‘Bones In Motion’ drawing acclaim from various corners of the music press and the record buying public. The back end of this year has seen Morrison join forces with Dublin’s All City for ‘Flourish’ – a mini album that further delves into the idiosyncrasies of his sound. Inviting yet subversive, well produced yet lo-fi, its an intriguing and exciting record that demands to be heard.
Given control over this week’s Hyp mix, Morrison has delivered a restless delight of a session. There are dancefloor moments, courtesy of the legendary 4hero and newer Rave champion Daniel Avery, although there are also sections of esoteric brilliance – with the whole mix bookended by a contribution from American author and psychedelics guru Timothy Leary…
