This week Hugo Massien turns in Hyp Mix 327, exploring dark ambient soundscapes developing into deeper techno territory, including tracks from champions of his adopted hometown of Bristol such as Hodge, Asusu, Ossia and Lurka.
Massien first emerged in 2013 as part of a wave of producers emerging from the UK funky and bassline scenes, developing a sound that referenced, darker, dubbier sounds than the deep house revival of the time.
In 2015, Massien was signed by XL Recordings for the Kontrol EP as part of the revived “Chapter” series of compilations designed to “reconnect with the spirit of the label’s early days” appearing alongside releases from Special Request, Zomby, Mumdance and Powell.
Traversing through ambience by Dominick Fernow as Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, electro from Carl Finlow aka Silicon Scally and clubbier fare from his Bristol contemporaries, Massien closes the mix with 3 original productions.
Henning Baer – Angel Dust
Hodge – All Is Not Lost
Ligovskoï – Labiate (Abdulla Rashim Remix)
