With a discography that dates back 17 years and a wealth of releases on influential labels like Boysnoize Records, Bpitch Control, Shitkatapult, 50WEAPONS and Tectonic, Berlin based veteran Phon.o‘s ever evolving sound draws from hip hop, dub, baltimore, house, dubstep, techno and beyond.
Beginning his musical journey playing records in his hometown alongside buddy Apparat, Phon.o’s eventual move to Berlin is when his name began to ring, becoming a mainstay for Shitkatapult and Modeselektor’s 50WEAPONS imprint, where he released his seminal Black Boulder album in 2012.
With an ability to combine UK-bass influences with techno sensibilities, Phon.o’s more recently found an alliance with Pinch’s Tectonic and Cold Recordings imprints, following up 2016’s dubstep affair Afterglow with his latest dose of damaging breakbeat tempo on the Schutt und Asche EP.
Described as sitting somewhere in between the sounds of UK funky and classic Shed, the record once again marks Phon.o’s desire to step into new fields, with a result that continuously makes his creations essential club material.
In celebration of the release, Phon.o steps up to our mix series, bringing with him a batch of twisted rave experiments that for the most part reside within the darker edges of the dance. Weapons from Pessimist, Skee Mask, Truncate, Hodge and more…
