Hyp 295: Benjamin Muñoz

Canadian producer Benjamin Muñoz first introduced us to his wonderfully chaotic palette of sound with single ‘Melle’ back in March. A collage of broken textures and jazzy tones, the track displayed Muñoz’s knack for intricate melodies and complex sound design.

Said to be inspired by a wide spectrum of music, his influences range from iconic pianist Ahmad Jamal to long-lost garage group Crazy Bald Heads. Munoz’s latest offering for London-based label Push & Run was motivated by a turbulent 2016, “born out of reflections on our innate defences of fear, anxiety, depression, and how they shrink perspective down to just our own needs.”

An extensive scope of both musical and cultural references are clear, as the unconventional rhythms and abstract patterns of his productions find suitable home in both the anime scores he grew up with and numerous strands of UK dance music.

A young producer with huge potential, Munoz steps up for Hyp 295, crafting similar technique to that of his production with a bag that pulls from the compositions of Yves Daoustv and Ryuichi Sakamoto to modern day classics from Andy Stott and Burial. Check below.
