Killawatt puts together a ‘Strange Places’ mix in time for Halloween.
UK-based Matthew Watt, aka Killawatt, started out crafting dubstep before turning his hand to the darker recesses of techno. Though he already boasted a large back catalogue – with releases on Tempa, Black Box and Osiris Music UK – it wasn’t till 2015 that he released his debut album, émigré. That record found a thrilling balance between the worlds of dubstep and techno, with more recent offerings seeing Watt deconstruct his musical template even further.
His latest, the Fazed EP, out now on Derelicht, was produced during a period of “self-reflection and change” for Watt. It holds three pieces of shadowy and visceral bass music that reveal his ever-evolving approach to sound design, and comes backed with remixes from Peng Sound’s Ossia, and DJ Deep & Roman Poncet’s collaborative project, Sergie Rezza.
On Hyp 277, Killawatt offers up a ghoulish maelstrom of beatless sounds – providing the perfect soundtrack to your Halloween. No tracklist to scour here – we suggest you turn out the lights for this one.
