This week’s Hyp mix comes from Sam Willis aka. Primitive World. Although Willis’ name may not be immediately familiar, his work as one half of WALLS has been winning acclaim ever since he and partner Alessio Natalizia dropped their self titled debut on KOMPAKT back in 2010. Their wistfully beautiful electronica has enjoyed release across a number of project, forever hanging just back from the dancefloor.
In the midst of his work as WALLS, Willis also released a solo album – 2012’s hypontic ‘Winterval’, as well as beavering away in secret as Primitive World. Under that alias he chalked up EP’s for Black Acre and Obsession – with both offerings applying a more concerted focus on the club space without ever losing the lo-fi esotericism that’s the producer’s calling card. Now unmasked as Primitive World, he’s earned fans in high places – with the likes of Joy Orbison, Untold and Tessela all big supporters so far.
There’s plenty to get limbs moving on Hyp 209 – see Kowton and Bruce’s unreleased banger ‘Lunch Atop A Skyscraper’ or Barnt’s gargantuan ‘Chappell’. Ultimately though, the mix sees Willis place, “an emphasis on heavy mood, texture and atmosphere” with plenty of live FX and grainy samples and dusty obscurities.
