Some people grow into making music, others are born into it. The son of the eventual owner of West London’s vinyl mecca Honest Jon’s, Budgie firmly falls into the latter camp. Growing up surrounded by records it was always inevitable that he would go on to dedicate his life to making and playing tunes, and that’s exactly how it panned out. A vital cog of London’s popular many headed Hip-Hop behemoth Livin’ Proof, Budgie has been tearing up parties around the capital and beyond for years. He’s also leant his production skills to making beats for the likes of Action Bronson, Fatima, J.Rocc and Pharcyde, as well as a full length project with The Alchemist. After working as an engineer with Theo Parrish earlier in the year, the Motor City veteran spurred Budgie to try to go it alone, with the results being last month’s superb self titled EP on Parrish’s Wildheart imprint.
A sublime concoction of Soul influenced Hip-Hop beats, the EP is every bit as accomplished as you’d expect from an artist with a lifetime of musical knowledge running through his veins. Here with the 190th Hyp mix this Monday, Budgie delivers a tightly woven 45 minutes of heady summer time vibes and dusty obscurities- with nearly every cut specially edited for this mix.
