Hyp 163: Batu
Tweet
Coming through with Hyp 163 this Monday morning is up and comer Batu. Debuting a few months ago on Pinch’s techno-leaning Cold imprint, he followed that release with an acclaimed 12″ for Pev, Kowton and Asusu’s dnuoS ytiviL label (that’s Livity Sound backwards, anagram fans) that comfortably with the trio’s UK flavoured techno aesthetic.
Here he delivers an hours worth of moody atmospherics and percussive dance-floor jams that dabble in everything from dub to tribal via a brief splash of Acid. Cuts from Pev and Kowton and the stark Detroit minimalism of Kyle Hall and Kero’s ‘Zug Island’ get run outs alongside a slew of dubs from Alex Coulton, Lurka and Batu himself, all cut especially for this mix. Displaying an ear for drama and rhythm not typically heard in artists only two releases deep into their careers, Batu shows why he’s ready to occupy the same darkened territory as his label bosses.
