Educating himself about Jungle’s mid 90’s heyday through radio rips and tape packs, London producer Morcee finally found a genre to call his own upon the emergence of Grime over a decade ago. Like much of the best current UK music, his productions are distinctly contemporary whilst simultaneously adopting the shared energy and attitude of Grime and Jungle. Inaugurating new label Tight Knit Records at the start of next month, Morcee delivers an effectively stripped back pair of tracks that work the dancefloor. The titular cut sees him rope in frequent Funkystepz collaborator Lily Mackenzie’s alluring vox to sit atop his bare bones, crafting a cut that is as sultry as it is banging. ‘Control’ meanwhile combines arpeggiated with heavy bass stabs and dizzying beat.
In advance of the EP’s release on September 9th, we got Morcee to supply us with this week’s Hyponik mix. With a selection that incorporates mutant blends of House, Funky, Bass and Grime, Morcee’s Hyp 143 is a mix from a thoroughly contemporary producer with a healthy respect for the past.
