Mr. Beatnick is one of the UK’s bonafide musical diamonds in the rough, and is one of few hip-hop producers to make a successful transition to house and techno whilst retaining his signature swing and vinyl crackle.
In his teens he was based in Lausanne, Switzerland, digging crates full time and warming up for artists like J Dilla and Madlib at the likes of Montreux Jazz Festival. After moving to London he became quickly immersed in CDR and the nascent beat scene, which produced artists like Paul White and Bullion. Over the years he’s released on labels like Far Out, Mantis and Altered Vibes, and worked on tracks for artists like Ahu, Azymuth and Atjazz.
A change came with the epic, string-laden “Synthetes”, released on Don’t Be Afraid in 2011, which proved a breakthrough moment for this talented beat-smith. The follow up EP “Sun Goddess” created a similar stir and a break in the clouds this year, and it’s safe to say that Beatnick is quietly gaining pace, working on remixes and getting ready to drop his debut album in 2013.
Ahead of his performance at the LDN DC & Hum+Buzz ‘Ikonika EP Launch’ this Friday, Beatnick has provided us with a real peach of a mix. As standard, this deep and grooving selection is 100% vinyl and nailed in one take, taking in tracks from Omar S, Andres, Moodymann, Pepe Braddock, Rick Wade, Ron Hardy and Mr Beatnick himself.
