Hyp 139: Greg Haines – Hello Africa! Mix

A musical journey that has seen him crossing borders and genre boundaries has finally taken Greg Haines to Africa. The British born, Berlin based composer has received acclaim for several years now as a result of both his solo work and his collaborations with the Dutch National ballet and his own collective: The Alvaret Ensemble. Although this year’s ‘Where We Are’ album on Denovali retained the considered, personable style that hitherto has garnered him a devoted following, the record is in many ways a departure from his previous work. The classical styling that once featured prominently have been replaced by a renewed focus on rhythm which although clearly owing much to African music, fortunately never veers into pastiche.

Ahead of Greg’s trip to Africa this summer he has provided us with a mix entirely of music from the continent, featuring a track from Senegal’s celebrated Yossou N’Dour as well as a host of lesser known artists. An illuminating and entertaining listen.
