We return to our Hyponik awards to champion the best of 2019

It’s fair to say that we’ve had another rollercoaster of a year. Political turmoil and uncertainty, rising global tensions and the current climate emergency have all dominated the headlines.

But despite all that we’ve also seen yet another incredible year for underground music. The pool of international talent has deepened once more, with a wealth of new technology, artists, labels and promoters entering the scene and keeping it vibrant, fresh and future focussed. While there are still problems to be addressed, 2019 has brought with it some positive progress, with policies of diversity and inclusivity slowly becoming the norm throughout the scene. We think that all these achievements are well worth shouting about!

It has been a mammoth (but fun) task for the Hyponik office to figure out our picks for the year. As always there has been far too much to choose from so this is by no means a comprehensive list, we’re only human! We do believe though that all the people and works that have made it into the polls below have made a real impact this year. The voting is now open, with the winners to be announced later this month. 2019 has been another strong year for the long play format across the genre spectrum. There has been a wealth of work on display from fresh debuts to experienced veterans. We’ve narrowed it down to ten, but what was your pick?

As always there are far too many tunes to count that have kept parties moving the world over. We’ve highlighted a selection that have given us with those special dancefloor moments, which was yours?

What is it that makes a good DJ? Curveball selections that send a crowd wild? Superb mixing and blending skills? A strong Insta game? It’s probably a combination of factors, but we’ll let you be the judge.

The appeal of live performances has not been lost in the world of electronic music. 2019 has proved to be another strong year with formidable new projects and line-ups gracing the stages of clubs and festivals all year round.

Record Labels are still at the heart of what we do. Despite all the challenges they face, it’s their diligent hard work and determination that brings the music of artists from around the world to the crates in our local shop. Who do you think deserves the top spot this year?

It’s always a challenge keeping up to date with the influx of new artists on the scene. As genre trends come and go, new generations of artists come to the fore and make waves. These are our pick of the bunch for the class of 2019.

There is something about a really good mix that satisfies in a way nothing else can. Be it the carefully planned and executed edition to a mix series, an education in a new genre, or a spontaneous live festival recording. We’ve heard some absolute gems this year and it’s been hard to narrow down! What’s your take?
