Moleskin and Boardgames drop knowledge on their essentials following their debut as Handsome Boys.
Originally a radio show that ran for three years and acted as a playground for some of London’s favourite MCs like Discarda, Jammz and Nico Lindsa., Handsome Boys, the collaborative project of longtime players Moleskin and Boardgame James, finally make good on their bank of bubbly-grime instrumentals with a killer debut EP via James’ new 1000Doors imprint.
Suitably dropped on Valentines Day, And The Award Goes To takes cues from the duo’s love for pirate radio, ’90s R&B production and reload energy, both building on the foundations of their radio show and paving the way for the next gen of instrumental grime producers.
To celebrate the release, we caught up with the pair to talk video games, studio necessities, award dedications and more. Check below!
What’s the grime instrumental you wish you made?
Any one of the absolute heartbreakers – Ghetto Kyote, Functions On The Low, Lake Days etc.
Favourite R&B production of all time?
Prince – The Beautiful Ones. Inspirational piece for us right there.
Give us a studio jam necessity?
Louis XIII, heated glasses, Partagas Series D No. 4s, sparkling water, nothing too fancy.
Dream MC to work with?
Flirta D? One of the few MCs you don’t wanna have to go after, we’d imagine.
Best reload story?
The reload on radio that preceded Moleskin and Kwam’s Hot Boy record. Kwam threw his hat and it never came back, we booked studio right away.
What video game would the Handsome Boys soundtrack?
The Need for Speed 1. Diablo, sun on the horizon, one hand on the wheel, opposition in the rear view. That’s what I’m talking about.
Where’s the last place you took inspiration from?
Storm hunting on a London rooftop.
What thug life moment should the new record soundtrack?
This is settling disagreements in the MGM Grand lobby on fight night music. Take it straight to the bar and make sure everyone’s got a Thug Passion in hand.
Who are you dedicating your award to?
We’d like to dedicate this award to our manager, our agent, our publicist, our label 1000Doors for believing in us, our stylist and team of creative directors, our driver Frank, the people of Lake Garda, and most importantly the fans – without you this wouldn’t be possible. Thank you, this one goes out to all of you!
