First Listen: Yak – ‘Umbra’ (Version)
TweetFollowing successful outings on R&S, 3024, Le Chatroom and Brotherhood Soundsystem, Sheffield wonder kid Yak serves up another rhythm frenzy on his return to Orson’s Version imprint.
Making his debut on the German bass-leaning label back in 2017 with heavyweight roller and arguably anthem of the year ‘Mido’, Yak continues to pursue club tension through slick drum operations and spaced-out sound design.
‘Umbra’ works almost entirely from a rhythmic palette, as Yak slows components down and shows he’s equally able working to a steadier groove. Though with counter-turns after almost every corner, conditions hardly stay stable, as Yak again demonstrates the kind of sharp drum placement and twisted programming that could echo those special Photek moments.
Umbra / Kaepora is out July 19th on Version.
