First Listen: Szare – ‘Scored’ (Project 13 MCR)

Manchester movement Project 13 has swiftly gained the reputation of offering some of the UK’s best when it comes to the more brutal side of experimental club music. It’s this commitment to quality that’s seen them gain continued support from established selectors like Pearson Sound, Pariah, Robag Wruhme and Alan Fitzpatrick. Having released the brilliant ‘Symbols’ from former YouTube sessions and Hyp mix contributor Acre in 2014, as well Divided’s ‘Uildi’ earlier this year, the label’s third offering comes from Idle Hands and Mindset affiliates, Manchester duo Szare. The two-track EP, ‘Parched/Scored’, is due August 3 and sees the pair continue much of what’s become expected of Project 13 – raw, pounding club music with an unfaltering darkness.

We’ve got a stream of the B-side, a scorching and relentless Techno number filled with slamming kicks and a boisterous, swaggering synth line. Szare’s contrasting balance of textures is enrapturing – from the hissing percussion that cuts like ice, to the lava hot overdriven bass, ‘Scored’ pushes elements to the extremities.Whilst it may seem a lazy comparison, the harsh metallic textures echo Manchester’s industrial past vividly. Try to keep a level head with this one…

‘Parched/Scored’ is out August 3 on Project 13 MCR. Keep up to date with the label on Facebook and Twitter.
