First Listen: Outboxx – ‘Gift Of Life’ (Futureboogie)

Close friends Matthew Lambert and Jake “Hodge” Martin have been crafting jazzy, analogue House as Outboxx since 2011, producing a number of well received records for revered independent labels such as BRSTL, Idle Hands, Well Rounded Records and Local Talk. Having treated us to the ‘The Fade’ EP in 2013, acclaimed Bristol dance institution Futureboogie have got the pair back again for the ‘Under The Lights’ EP, out this month (25th May). Since ‘The Fade EP’, the pair have been perfecting their blend of soulful House – seamlessly merging Hodge’s raw, driving drum machine rhythms with the melodic intricacies of Lambert’s jazz-infused keys – their new EP is a journey through classic House tropes and contemporary production prowess.

One of the highlights is ‘Gift Of Life’, a funky 90s-House inspired number featuring the elegant vocals of frequent collaborator Naomi Jeremy, and is available to stream exclusively below. Jeremy’s dreamlike melodies drift atop understated House grooves and smoky chords before we’re hit with a barrage of squelchy synth leads that exhibit Lambert’s ear for white-hot Funk melodies. The club friendly cut harks back to the glory days of early House and is proof to Outboxx’s ability to consistently construct late night anthems – having had tunes regularly dropped by Julio Bashmore, Deetron, detroit heavyweight Ryan Elliott and Panorama bar resident Tama Sumo.

‘Under The Lights’ is out 25th May on Futureboogie. Stay up to date with Outboxx here.
