Both Lia Mice and Loraine James have been on our radar here at Hyponik for a while now. Mice is the Australian-born DJ, producer and instrument designer who’s made a conscious effort to immerse herself in the UK underground, particularly the moodier shades of house and techno. Creatively, Mice’s productions straddle the type of electro and new wave sounds that have become so synonymous with Optimo Music, JD Twitch’s imprint that released her latest album The Sampler As A Time Machine.
Where Mice may possess a club-ready edge to her work, Loraine James’ experimentalism holds her as one of dance music’s most endearing characters. The North Londoner took cues from World, Jazz and IDM on her, deeply personal, recent album; For You And I on Hyperdub, which has been considered by many as one of 2019’s best albums.
One might imagine James’ to lay on a complete overhaul of Mice’s ‘Overwrite The Past’ when entasked with remix duties, but instead the result is a prime cut of percussive momentum. The dreamy haze of the original still maintains its place – Mice’s vocal outbursts chime in and out – but James’ builds frenetic drum work into the mix giving the finished article some dance floor clout. Still in keeping with the hyperactive habits of For You and I, this remix successively fulfils the craving for both Loraine James and Lia Mice.
