Hugo Massien’s ‘Ghost Note‘ EP came out on Dusky’s 17 Steps imprint last December, on the heels of two well-received releases via XL Recordings and E-Beams. Pairing a killer dose of liquid bass with dusty breaks, the title track was a tough, rolling piece of club artillery.
Massien has enlisted Bristol’s Larry McCarthy (aka Bruce) to put his own unique spin on a remix of the track, premiered here for an exclusive first listen. After gaining notoriety for the experimental curveball ‘Not Stochastic‘ EP, released in 2014 via Hessle Audio, Bruce went on to develop his unique take on club music through releases on Dnuos Ytivil, Idle Hands, Timedance and Hemlock.
The remix, named after the ‘X’ symbols used to denote ghost notes in musical notation, takes the vibes from 1992 straight into 2018. Gritty, syncopated percussion is run through brutal distortion and atmospheric delays to create something entirely new and recognisably Bruce.
‘Ghost Note (Bruce’s ‘X’ Remix)’ is out January 19 on 17 Steps.
