Earlier this year, the stellar Passed For Transmission Vol. 1 thrust Agrippa‘s Par Avion label into the focus of UK techno fans, with this maiden release selling out within a matter of days. Joining Captain Agrippa on the release were co-pilots Meta, the Cambridge-based duo producing bass-riddled heaters, and Henry Greenleaf, whose work rumbles and rolls with purpose and power. These three sub-heavy songs are certified club numbers, bruising dancefloors with each cracking snare and hefty sub, and left listeners impatient for the next release. Thankfully, the imprint’s next release, a four-track EP from Greenleaf, is set to drop in mid-November, continuing the thunderous vibe from PAR001.
Based in Bristol, Greenleaf’s releases embody the true sound of modern dub-infused techno. A firm favourite of Lamont and Paleman, frequently cueing Greenleaf’s tracks on the airwaves, the young producer has fashioned his own individual sound of genre-spanning bassweight. Drawing upon elements of jungle, footwork, dubstep and techno, the end product always possesses an intense energy capable of testing the strongest of structures. His Fold Together EP is no different, consisting of four growling riddims designed for after dark. A1 and title track ‘Fold Together’ combines echoing bells and floating keys with a thick, undulating sub bass, driven with each kick. ‘Rolling Untitled’ is another robust concoction of eerie keys and tough percussion, living up to its name. On the B-side, the broken beats and head-spinning vocals of ‘The Way’ marry harmoniously to produce a chugging machine fuelled by characteristics of dub and jungle.
Closing track ‘Half Under’ is a textural masterclass, exhibiting Greenleaf’s detailed approach to production. Shimmering hi-hats merge with wonky, off-kilter keys and a humming bassline in groovy synergy. This playful yet powerful track is a clear demonstration of Greenleaf’s talent, making the upcoming producer a must-watch. Check out this B2 rumbler below.
