The London-based producer showcases his versatility on new footwork-inspired project.
Glasgow-based label Astral Black have been on an enviable run of quality releases from the likes of label boss Jon Phonics, Inkke, and DJ Milktray since 2013, one of which was Drae Da Skimask’s ’95 Mindfulness – a woozy LP of slow-fi trap beats. It’s a sound he’s carefully built over three projects with Astral Black, and so it’s a welcome surprise to hear his new footwork-inflected EP, Ficante.
On project standout ‘Why U Mad’, Drae combines chopped vocals with wistful melodies and frantic beats. While this is likely just a quick detour on his musical journey, Ficante proves Drae’s chops as a multi-faceted producer with a lot more left to show.
