First Listen: Alfie – ‘Coasting’ (Outer Zone)

Celebrating it’s tenth year of bringing the most exciting artists in the game down to it’s intimate¬† basement, The label arm of Glasgow’s infamous venue La Cheetah presents it’s third release with a 4 tracker “Plastic Entertainment” from local hero and La Cheetah Staff member Alfie AKA The Burrell Connection. Following up records from Solid Blake including a DJ Stingray remix as well as Glasgow native Modus, the label continues its wide ranging aesthetic with the EP touching on various disparate influences, from breaks and middle eastern melodies, to classic trance and second wave Detroit futurism.

Our pick of the EP is A1 “Coasting”, which employs mid pace electro programming with a thin layer of grit, over a heady 7 and a half minutes. Melancholic synths swirl beneath plucked top lines awash with reverb, evoking a mood both psychedelic and colourful but not fully immersive, like a scene one is watching from afar. Technos indebtment to trance is at an all time high and while many tracks narrowly avoid pastiche , “Coasting” uses the sound palette to unique effect with its feet on the dance floor yet its head somewhere else entirely.

Plastic Entertainment is out on 5th August on Outer Zone.
