First Listen: DJ N.K. – ‘Ghetto Whistles’ (Body Promise)

A year on from their first compilation, Australian label Body Promise is due to release a second array of club-focused sounds titled Fantastic Effects. The compilation is made up of a “carefully curated selection of bold and direct tracks from Australia and abroad” that centre around a tight and percussive sound, demonstrating the label’s swift evolution over the past twelve months.

Today we’re giving you an exclusive first listen to a cut from Fantastic Effects by the Portuguese producer Pedro Cardoso, AKA DJ N.K. Cardoso rose to prominence as a member of Lisbon’s influential DJ’s Do Guetto crew, a now-disbanded group of visionary producers including the likes of DJ Marfox, DJ Nervoso and DJ Firmeza.

The crew pioneered a ragged, high-energy and percussively dense Afro-Portugese electronic sound that fuses modern production techniques with more traditional Angolan kuduro music.

‘Ghetto Whistles’ – said to be inspired by the whistles that boys in Cardoso’s neighbourhood would use to communicate – lurches and stutters its way through the streets of Lisbon with an insistent kick drum overlaid by clattering percussion and (you guessed it) an array of distorted whistle samples. The deceptively simple track is an energetic introduction to the wide array of percussive explorations found on the Fantastic Effects compilation.

Fantastic Effects is out via Body Promise on November 24. Pre-order here.
