DJ Deep’s favourite freaky vocal house cuts

“I see my job as being a big filter,” says DJ Deep, rather underplaying the key role the Frenchman has had in the development of house music over the last 20 years. “As a vinyl junkie, I am in the record stores chasing jams almost every day. Sharing what I think are the greatest records of the moment or the most timeless personal classics is something that has motivated me throughout the years.”

Those years have seen Cyril Etienne emerge from the Paris scene to make a real impact on the world stage. Starting out under the guidance of Laurent Garnier, Cyril quickly graduated to playing worldwide, always taking with him a sense of history informed by a love of Chicago, New York and Detroit. Blurring the lines between house and techno, DJ Deep also joins the dots between classic and contemporary cuts with his own sense of story telling not only as a DJ and producer, but also a label boss and party curator. By now, he has cultivated a deserving reputation as someone with immaculate taste in music, no matter whether he’s making it, playing it, or showcasing it on the radio.

For his latest release though, DJ Deep sets his sights back firmly on the dancefloor, as the Deeply Rooted boss offers another four-tracks of sweet house and techno temptations for the second volume of his Raw Cuts series.

To honor the record, which is officially out today, we caught up with the veteran Parisian and requested he hit us with his ten favourite cuts of freaky vocal house. Picking out Blake Baxter, Moodymann, LB Bad, Terrence Dixon and more, check out the playlist below.

1. Vincent Floyd. Feat. Chan – I’m So Deep

One of my favourite house tracks ever, produced by Vincent Floyd and with Armando on the mix. I chose my DJ name out of this song, I couldn’t stop playing it over and over, it meant so much to me.

2. Blake Baxter – When A Thought Become U

6th release on Underground Resistance’s label, all the tracks on this 12″ are classics, but I specifically connected to this track, it had house and techno elements, and those haunting vocals.

3. LB BAD – I like To Move

One of my all time classics that I had the chance to re-issue on my House Music records label back in 2004, when featuring it on my City to City mix on BBE. It has been a pleasure getting in touch with LB Bad and having a chance to re-issue one of the very personal classic tracks here by the legendary Prince of Dance Music LB Bad!

4. Terrence Dixon Feat Andrea Festa – Inner Beauty

I love the minimalism of this track, which is part of Mr Terrence Dixon’s genius and how the vocals give it such an intense and emotional vibe.

5. Cajmere featuring Derrick Carter – Dream States

Cajmere and Derrick Carter joining forces on a Deep release of Cajual with a freaky wet vibe!…

6. Logic – The Warning (Inner Mix)

An absolute house classic with those unique deep and pitched down vocals, a true Masterpiece by the S Man!

7. Deep Contest – Underground Life

It’s been such a privilege to get to learn from Ludovic Navarre in his studio, and try to emulate some of the feelings of the House tracks I liked so much were giving me.

8. Moody – Freeki Mutha F cker

Well it does not get freakier than this does it? 🙂 An all time Moodymann favourite here.

9. Lou2 – Freaky

Hold on! Well it does get freakier! Lil Louis and Louie Vega joining forces on a Strictly Rhythm classic!

10. Agoria feat. Carl Craig – Speechless (Radio Slave remix)

A nice reunion of very talented friends and mentors here delivering a modern classic of the genre.
