Beesmunt Soundsystem: 10 essential film soundtracks

OST gold from Blade Runner, Grave of the Fireflies and more.

Since 2008, Beesmunt Soundsystem – made up of long-time friends and Amsterdam natives, David van der Leeuw and Luigi Vittorio Jansen – have been experimenting with a vast array of sounds. Their sets incorporate a wide selection of house, techno, disco and anything else that suits, and it’s this anything-goes approach that landed them a monthly slot on Red Light Radio, and a residency at Amsterdam’s fabled Trouw club until its closure in 2015.

The duo’s approach to their own music is no different. Releasing on Soweso, Just Jack, Church, and HNYTRX – the offshoot label of San Francisco’s Honey Soundsystem – they’ve blended their numerous influences into a succinct sound on EPs like Sensual WorksAfterglow, and Simcha Riddim, in collaboration with San Proper.

Ahead of their appearance at this year’s Oranjebloesem in Amsterdam, Beesmunt Soundsystem’s David digs deep for the essential film soundtracks that have informed their vast musical palate. Filled with the obvious classics (Blade Runner, Miami Vice), you’ll also find rarer gems that are essential viewing and listening – from Grave of the Fireflies to The Emerald Forest.

1. Jan Hammer – Crockett’s Theme (Miami Vice)

This song makes me want to live in the 80s even more than I did already. I love music that makes me feel like I had a life before this one – in this case as a crooked cop or cheesy Italo DJ in ’83.

2. Armando Trovajoli – Brutti Sporchi e Cattivi

First, watch this movie. Second, I’m just going to put the English translation of the lyrics here to explain.

‘Oh aho but where are you going? oh aho

I want to go where I like, mind your own business

I want to go where I like, come with me!

Don’t ask any question, we’re going to fill up (with food)

If you want to join me, we’re going to be over there

Don’t ask any question, we’re going to fill up

If you want to join me, you can sit right here’

3. Blade Runner Soundtrack [Full Vinyl Rip 2013]

Best science-fiction movie ever, best soundtrack to go with it.

4. Grave of the Fireflies – Sad Soundtrack Collection – Opening and Ending

I watched this movie with my dad when I was young, it totally blew me away. This is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen, the soundtrack had a big part in that I think.

5. Tangerine Dream – Risky Business

Don’t watch the movie is an important tip here… Tangerine Dream additions to the soundtrack are all 100% bliss tho.

6. Junior Homrich – The Jaguar theme

A fine song I found through this fine gentleman James Pole, from the motion picture Der Smaragwald (The Emerald Forest). Junior Homrich at his best.

7. The Emerald Forest OST – Eagle Break

Just wanted to put in another one.

8. Waterworld Soundtrack – “Main Titles”

9. Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Opening sequence)

Something to listen to for a romantic night with somebody who can care about this.

10. haadsaa – y.o.g.a – 1984

Skip Kraftwerk up to 140 bpm and you’re a true spacecat.

Beesmunt Soundsystem play Oranjebloesem, Amsterdam, April 27. Tickets available here.
