Barely Legal spotlights 10 stars on the rise

It’s fair to say that Barely Legal, real name Chloe Robinson, made a name for herself early on in life. Growing up on her mother’s diet of UK garage, at 19 she bought her first set of decks and before long she was a regular on platforms like Rinse FM and 1xtra.

Her ability behind the buttons means she’s as comfortable tracing the paths of drum and bass or grime as she is house or dubstep, with the Brummie flag-bearer regularly invited to perform at major clubs like Fabric, Motion and Warehouse Project.

Launching her record label, Pretty Weird Records, in 2017 to further champion her cross-genre reputation, today we catch up with her to ask for some guidance on the producers and DJs that we need to be paying close attention to.

Picking out the sounds of Yak, Jossy Mitsu, L U CY, IMOGEN and more, read all of Chloe’s picks below!

1. IMOGEN

I’ve loved watching Imogen’s progression this year, she’s a great DJ and producer and is killing it in the techno scene.

2. Yak

I’ve been playing Yak’s tunes for a few years now and I was really excited to see Martyn sign him to his label 3024 recently giving him the exposure he deserves 🙂

3. Al Wootton

This is a new alias by Deadboy. There’s not much online regarding tunes from Al Wootton but I’ve been playing some tracks out in sets and they’ve gone down really well. They’re sick.

4. Narcissist

Found out about Narcissist via my promos a couple of months ago and had a look online to find out more as I was really feeling the tunes. So far all I can find out is that it’s a project by Marc & Rob. Hoping they’ll put some more stuff out this year.

5. Cadans

Shared a transfer with well known drum and bass producer Icicle this year on the way to Outlook and got talking techno, he then told me about his techno alias, Cadans. As expected, very good!

6. Jossy Mitsu

Jossy is a DJ who I really rate and I’m sure I will see on a lot of line ups this year. She’s got a really strong, broad music taste and is a talented, hard working DJ.

7. Soundbwoy Killah

Only discovered him about a year and a half ago, he’s had some sick recent releases and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s coming up next.

8. L U C Y

Saw her on loads of line ups and really enjoyed her releases last year. She recently got listed as one to watch in 2019 by Mixmag.

9. Basic Rhythm

An alias to the artist ‘East Man’ describing himself as modernist hardcore. I like his dark heavy sound.

10. Wax Wings

Saw Wax Wings for the first time at Ministry of Sound for a ‘He.She. They’ event and really enjoyed the techno selection leading me to want to find out more. Really talented producer.

Barely Legal plays the 5th anniversary of AMP Lost & Found festival on 2-5 May 2019 in Malta.
