Hazy electronica goes orchestral as Actress and the LCO present the latest iteration of their ever-evolving collaboration, alongside performances from Duval Timothy, Silvia Kastel and Toxe.

Texture has always been one of the primary concerns of Actress (aka Darren Cunningham), his music melding peculiar samples with decayed dancefloor sounds to create abstract, R&B concrète. In the LCO he finds an ensemble that matches his curiosity for finding new, unusual sounds – a plastic shopping bag becomes a snare drum, while a piano prepared with Blu Tack is transformed into a live sampler. Taking the helm on drum machine and laptop, Actress integrates with the LCO to become one instrument – the orchestra reimagined as a groovebox.

Complementing the performance is a programme of like-minded musical adventurers curated by Actress. Multi-disciplinary artist Duval Timothy opens the evening with his impressionistic piano compositions, before a performance from Silvia Kastel, whose music blends sound art, noise and dance music. After the show, Swedish producer Toxe will make a debut live appearance on the ClubStage with a set of jittery house rhythms, hip-hop beats and muscular pop.

As always, expect our selectors and musicians to expose you to rhythms and melodies from around the world, all brought together to create a vibrant journey through sound.

Andrew Ashong Dj- set (Sound Signature)

Sultan Swing (Live Jazz Band)

Lexus Blondin (TRC)

Guilhem Monin (Social Joy)

Andrew Ashong, Debuting on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature label with the truly incredible ‘Flowers’ that won him Track of the Year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide, Ashong has quickly garnered a global following with his special brand of danceable and smoky jazz & soul. He also happens to be an amazing vinyl DJ, playing a mix of soul, funk, disco, bossa nova, afrobeat and more. It is with great pleasure that we have him back at Social Joy for the second time.

North London based band, The Sultan’s Swing is slowly making a name in the London UK jazz scene. From deep grooves, infectious melodies and psychedelic climaxes the band is truly capturing the spirit of their collective musical influences and Jazz music in general. Capturing the moment and the mood wherever it may take them, the band’s music is mostly freely improvised and will set the tone perfectly to start the night.

We will also welcome on the night of our good friend who has made a name for himself by running the highly regarded Total Refreshment Centre venue and the “Church of Sound” Night. I’m of course talking about Lexus Blondin who is an amazing Dj and someone who has that skill to play the right music at the right time. We are in no doubt that he will once again surprise us with his musical taste.

To finish the line-up we have Guilhem Monin, our Social Joy’s guiding resident.

We are aiming to bring a night of music and togetherness in a social environment where each individual is free to express their true nature. This creates a sense of wholeness and completeness rarely experienced in the modern world. The result is pure joy.

Oval Space x All Points East welcomes in the summer months with a party mixing indispensable artists from two of dance music’s original cities; Detroit and London.

We can now announce that our headliner is a true driving force of deep house – Omar S. One of the D’s leading lights, the FXHE head-honcho needs little introduction. His raw, unfiltered production style and prowess in the booth have seen Omar make a meteoric rise through the ranks to become one of the finest underground artists of our time. Joining is fellow compatriot Kyle Hall, label head of Wild Oats and innovative producer in his own right. As part of Detroit’s ‘new breed,’ Hall learnt the ropes under the likes of Mike Huckaby and Rick Wilhite – not a bad place to start.

Across the pond, Apron Records bossman Funkineven is representing London. A fearless mixing style, blending broken beat, boogie, house and plenty more besides has marked Steven Julien as one the city’s best, and his prior collaborations with Hall as Funkinevil make his inclusion even more appropriate. Rounding off the bill, Brownswood and Wildheart manager Kwasiba Savage, who’s been making waves of late with her post-punk In Flames show on NTS.

SGT Pokes

In 2008 – spearheaded by founding member of DMZ, SGT Pokes – Croydon’s Black Sheep bar became the humble home of seminal dubstep party Croydub.

Croydub represented a real love and appreciation of the original dubstep sound, and very much had a foothold in its hometown. The list of former Croydub resident DJs and MCs reads like a “who’s who” of the dubstep scene, with every possible pioneer of the sound playing their part in the development of Croydub’s reputation as an unmissable event.

Due to the abrupt closure of the Black Sheep in 2013, Croydub had lost its home and the parties gradually came to an end…until now.

On Bank Holiday Sunday, May 27th, SGT Pokes and Croydub are back to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, with an incredible lineup of artists & special guests.

We’re delighted to be announcing a series of parties at Rye Wax and to kick off proceedings we’ve invited a stacked lineup of our favourite DJs and producers to showcase various sounds from the UK electronic music continuum.

Lurka (Fringe White / Timedance / Hotline)

Emerging on the scene in 2011 with a string of strong dubstep releases on labels such as Box Clever and Black Box, including a collaborative 12” with Commodo, Lurkas sound has evolved over the years while consistently displaying clear reference points of the UK underground. Recent years have seen Lurka release on Hyponik favourites such as Black Acre, Hotline and Batu’s Timedance, whom he released 2 EPs with on his freshly minted Fringe White label.

Proc Fiskal (Hyperdub / Cosmic Bridge)

Hailing from Edinburgh, young Joe Powers has released some of the most unique sounding music we’ve heard in the past year, taking instrumental grime’s framework and accelerating it, drawing from some striking samples in the process. After an a pair of impressive 4 trackers on Kode9’s Hyperdub and Om Unit’s Cosmic Bridge, Proc is due to release his debut album on Hyperdub on the very day of the event.

Agrippa (Par Avion / Version)

Having been championed on the radio circuit by Loefah, Paleman and Lamont, with ample dubs as displayed on his 100% productions mix on Berlin Community Radio, Agrippa deservedly came into the limelight recently with his excellently received “Mygraine Urgraine” EP on Berlin based Version, as well as starting his own label, Par Avion with friends Meta and Henry Greenleaf.

Aurora (Spectral)

Good friend Aurora Mitchell’s DJ sets tend to be an amalgamation of ambient, experimental rhythms, emotional house and oddball techno. Also running the hotly-tipped Rye Wax party Spectral with a similar aesthetic, Aurora’s hosted a number of rising selectors in the past that include Anu, LOFT and Sybil Jason, whilst more recently experimenting with her own “spacious, squeaky techno” as Vampire Crab.
