With Tropics, a.k.a Chris Ward, soon to be spilling a whole album upon us in the autumn, he has given us a glimpse of what to expect with his latest ‘Mouves’ EP. Following last years well received ‘Soft Vision EP’, ‘Mouves presents 4 upbeat tracks, two of which being reworks by New York house/garage man FaltyDL and Keep Shelly in Athens.
Unfortunately the original ‘Mouves’ track lacks a little something. Although the vocals work well with the lofty upbeat bells, the whole sound is a little too washed out for this pair of ears.
Although a little critical of the ‘Mouves’ track, I have nothing but compliments for ‘Celebrate’. This short two minute piece sums up the feeling of the EP excellently, supplying a creatively delicate yet clear sound excellent for those Pimms sipping afternoons. The build up of the intricate guitar and light beat supplemented with a slightly awkward string sound towards the end, leaves you feeling interested and generally happy.
With the Keep Shelly in Athens rework supplying a tech-y, broken sound with 2-step patterns and a rich sound, and FaltyDL’s effort bringing his now trademark deep bass house feel, the EP as a whole seriously builds expectation of what’s to come in the autumn.
The ‘Mouves’ EP is released via Planet Mu on July 18.
