New York producer Sporting Life is one half of hip hop duo Ratking, and after signing to R&S last year has been dropping a number of intriguing solo projects, including a cassette offering (the label’s first tape release in 18 years) and more recently, the Slam Dunk EPs.
Track ‘Nothing To Hide’ features on the third and final EP in the series, and once again sees Sporting Life showcasing his inventive production prowess, blending gritty stuttering drums with looped piano chords in a simple yet brilliant fashion. And there’s just something so engrossing about fellow Ratking member Wiki. Maybe it’s his unique inflection or stark lyricism. But whatever it is, it makes you sit up, listen, and take note. This delivery is perfectly contrasted by Devonté Hynes’ dreamy vocals on the hook, who is still riding high after his well-received Blood Orange LP, Freetown Sound.
The characteristically bizarre but brilliant remix from Babyfather is also worth a mention, too.
