Jessie Ware & Sampha – ‘Valentine’ (Young Turks)

Out on Young Turks as a special heart shaped 7”, ‘Valentine’ see’s two of the most exciting new vocal talents team up to produce a single of mesmerising quality. Jessie Ware and Sampha have both attracted attention with their collaborations with masked beat-smith SBTRKT. Having brought his producing and vocal abilities to ‘Break Off’ forRamp Recordings, Sampha also sang on ‘Look At Stars’ for SBTRKT’s ‘Step In Shadows’ EP, whereas Ware dropped one of the vocal cuts of the year on ‘Nervous’, Numbrs biggest selling track of 2010.

Much more than a set of vocal chords, Sampha shows off his production skills with an arrangement that beautifully compliments both voices. Ware’s angelic tones lead off with an enchanting four note melody keeping time, before shuffling percussion carries you to the enveloping warmth of the chorus. She’s then joined on the mic by Sampha himself, whose effortless soul adds a further dimension of soothing tranquillity on what is simply a stunning track. It may only be just over two minutes long, but ‘Valentine’ is more than enough to blow all your worries away.

If their work with SBTRKT announced Ware and Sampha to the world, their work with each other demonstrates the undeniable talent that will surely see them make huge strides in the very near future. Buy it for your girlfriend or boyfriend, or sack them and buy it for yourself.
