Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming series deals with the peak of Disco and the rise of Hip-Hop in late ’70s New York.
The thrilling trailer – which you can watch below – is driven by the vibrancy of the show’s South Bronx setting. Graffiti, bright fabrics, breakdancing and a club scene with Grandmaster Flash are counterbalanced by nightclub shootouts and the well documented inner city turmoil of the South Bronx at the time.
The opening narrative sets the scene for the 13 episode drama:
“The pale-faced media tells us we’re all going to hell. But maybe we just the first ones to light the fire. I’m trying to snuff it out, but that’s like oxygen to a flame.”
Keep an eye out for appearances from Giancarlo Esposito (aka Breaking Bad’s Gus) and teenage superstar Jaden Smith.
Series 1 of ‘The Get Down’ is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.
