A two hour video of the final party at the legendary New York club has emerged on YouTube.
Paradise Garage is a name synonymous with dance music culture and one never more relevant than in today’s maelstrom of US house and disco influenced sounds. From humble beginnings in the early 70s, founder Michael Brody elevated the Manhatten nightclub from elite underground spot catering to a predominantly black and gay crowd, to a temple of disco and house music that welcomed the cream of the NY party scene and set the precedent for nightclubs worldwide. At the centre of it all was the legendary Larry Levan, whose eclectic sets provided the soundtrack and inspired generations of DJs and clubbers in the process.
Documentary of the goings on inside the Garage is notoriously rare, so when a two hour collection of hazy footage from its August 1987 closing party appears on YouTube it’s well worth a look. History right here.
