Starkey’s ‘Inter-Mission’ EP will be released digitally on March 25.
Along with labelmate Dev79, Starkey runs the Philly-hailing, street bass imprint Seclusiasis. He has featured in a number of their compilations and contributed remixes, but to this day, has never released an EP proper. The five-track, diverse label debut is now here, and serves as quality follow up to last year’s ‘Orbits’ LP on his London home, Civil Music.
‘Inter-Mission’ opens with an emotive collaboration with vocalist Leah Smith and sets the tone for the R&B-leaning new direction. Urgent melodies and bright synthwork retain the sci-fi feel of his previous work, before the EP takes a more abrasive turn with the ringing, whirring and clattering drums of ‘Back At It’.
‘Space’, featuring Nina Smith and Karizma, is the overtly hip-hop cut, but diverges from the US trap phenomenon with gritty UK style. ‘Lies’ is another synth-led instrumental club-banger, and nicely tees up the comparatively downtempo EP closer ‘Crystal’.
