Snow Ghosts Prepare For ‘A Wrecking’

The Houndstooth group’s second album will land next February.

After debuting on Black Acre back in 2011, last year finally saw Ross ‘Throwing Snow’ Tones and Hannah ‘Augustus Ghost’ Cartwright’s Snow Ghosts project finally drop their debut album in the form of ‘A Small Murmuration’. A moody delight of a record, it showcased originalty and versatility from the talented pair and had us eagerly awaiting more. The intervening year or so has seen Tones drop his own debut album as Throwing Snow, as well as picking up another alias in the shape of his floor focused Alight project. Snow Ghosts meanwhile have now become a trio with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Oliver Knowles (EXES) in time for their follow up LP, ‘A Wrecking’ due February 16th. Speaking on the addition of Knowles, Tones and Cartwright said: “We write a lot more fluidly now, and most of this album has been written together, on location. We all bring ideas to the table, but having another song-writing brain means these are then transformed into something completely unique…It feels a lot more complete than the first album, more rounded.”

Carrying an, “undeniably strong nautical theme running throughout”, ‘A Wrecking’ contains field recordings from Dorset’s Chesil Beach – whilst the title also nods to shipwrecks, as well as wrecks of a more metaphysical nature. The album was recorded using binaural recording techniques to emphasise the acoustic properties of some unique spaces, inluding an abandoned bank vault and a chapel. Wabi Sabi – a Japanese concept that emphasizes the sonic beauty of imperfections, is also said to be an integral principle behind the record – with the group going as far to describe it as like that of a, “fourth member”.

Our first taster of the album comes in the shape of ‘Bowline’, available to stream below. A beautifully mournful number, its highly evocative of the monochrome English melancohly which has become the cornerstone of their aesthetic – with swells of strings and haunting vocals. Its available as a free download if you pre-order the album here ahead of its February 16th release.

‘A Wrecking’ is out February 16th on Houndstooth. You can pre-order it here.
