New Photo Book Looks At The Art Of Hip Hop Mixtapes

‘Damn Son Where Did You Find That?’ focuses on the weird and wonderful art of Hip-Hop mixtapes.

A bizarre domain unto themselves, Hip-Hop mixtape covers constitute some of the most arresting musical imagery of modern times. The first book of its kind, ‘Damn Son Where Did You Find That’ contains over 500 covers and interviews with mixtape designers such as KidEight, Miami Kaos, Mike Rev, Tansta and Skrilla. Put together by Paris based designers Michael Thorsby and Tobias Hansson, the pair describe their interviews with the designers featured as: “They take us through the creative process, how visual trends have come and gone, moral hazards and how designing mixtape covers changed the trajectories of their lives”.

They continue, “A visual world that reached unseen levels at the turn of the millennium, uncensored, unregulated and extreme, it is the most anarchic of all genres of graphic design. Freed from major label guidelines, lawyer opinions and moral hindrances, the designers featured in Damn Son Where Did You Find This? are truly unique, something that is hard to come by in today’s global world of intertwined visual tendencies.”

Released in a run of 400 hand numbered copies, the book is available via this dedicated microsite.
