LWE are to take over the Shoreditch venue on the last weekend of every month, starting this January.
After another 12 months of taking over venues all across London with a range music styles and brands, LWE are starting off 2015 by finding a place to call their own. From 30th January onwards, the last weekend of each month will see Shoreditch’s Village Underground venue play host to Mixed – a brand new concept from the promoters.
Using House music as a starting point, the night promises to “explore the breath of the scene to celebrate eclecticism and the cross pollination of styles in electronic music. With the aim to showcase revolutions in the genre, Mixed will draw on forward thinking artists that have redefined styles through originality in the studio and innovation in the club”.
The first edition will see Ejeca, Citizen and Sisterhood play, with Februrary’s installment bringing Red D, of Belgian duo FCL, to Village Underground alongside Kidnap Kid and Zoo Look. In the meantime LWE are running a mix competition in tandem with Mixcloud and Point Blank to win a mini residency and a production course – which can be entered here.
Before the series gets underway we caught up with Paul and Jack from LWE to find out more about Mixed.
It was a busy 2014 for LWE. What have been some of the highlights for you guys?
Sure has, it’s been a crazy year for us! 2014 started with the first ever music event at Tobacco Dock, London’s biggest ever daytime New Years Day event, exciting and terrifying at the same time! Since then we have had a whole host of great events this year including the one-off reopening of Shoreditch Underground station for 2020Vision, Maceo Plex / Maetrik double header at Factory 7, return of Cocoon to Building Six and our personal favourite, Drumcode Halloween!
What kind of vibe can people expect from the Mixed series?
Fun, a more intimate LWE event and of course some good music!
What was the thinking behind running a monthly event?
It’s something we have wanted to do for a while but truth be told we never had the time, the right venue or the right idea that excited all of us. With a monthly event it gives us the opportunity to build and develop the brand so it has its own sound, identity and a platform for us invite some of the artists we have been wanting to work with but just haven’t found the right show for them.
You’ve used a lot of different venues over the years with LWE – what is it about Village Underground that makes it a good fit for Mixed?
It’s a great warehouse style of space in the centre of Shoreditch with amazing staff and great sound… what’s there not to LOVE about it!
Lets talk about the programming for the first two parties – why did you choose Ejeca, FCL, Citizen and Kidnap Kip to kick things off?
Because these are the guys we are most excited about and who are really pushing a new, fresh sound that is a bit different to what we do at our larger events and perfect for where we want to go with Mixed as a event.
There’s a competition to win a mini-residency at the night – what are you looking for from potential entrants?
Someone who can do more then just mix two records together. Hopefully weave a magic spell and get the dance floor moving! Our Tobacco Dock resident Enzo Tedeschi has enjoyed a great year since the first Tobacco Dock, we’d love to find someone who can grow with us and Mixed.
How did you end up working with Mixcloud and Point Blank on this?
Mixcloud have been our long term partners, they host our LWE mix series and we work together across various different concepts throughout the year. We have always been fans of Point Blank and what they do and this seemed like the right opportunity to ask them to be involved.
We’ve just started 2015, have you guys got any resolutions for the next 12 months?
Get some sleep! Although I can’t see that happening for a few months!
Mixed takes place the last weekend of every month at Village Underground, with the event 30th January. You can find out more about Mixed and buy tickets here, whilst you can enter the competition here.
