Guardian Creates New Genre: ‘Mutant House’

Readers of the Guardian’s music blog will have noticed the UK publication has taken it upon itself to create an entirely new genre for the electronic music canon; mutant house.

An interesting article appeared on the site last week, explaining how a mutant strain of house has apparently completely altered the original genre’s DNA, and goes on to name the true exponents of this sound as the new generation of bass music producers Julio Bashmore, Altered Natives, Hardhouse Banton, Lil Silva and T Williams.

Whilst the ‘bruk house’ tag seems more fitting for the work of people like Hardhouse Banton and Danny Native, the mutant house idea does highlight the increasingly open-ended approach to genre’s that bass music producers and djs have had in recent years. With the success of Instra:mental and dBridge’s Autonomic podcasts (and now club nights) and original dubstep and grime artists turning to classic house and UK funky for inspiration, it seems 2010 has been the year in which house music returned.
