The West Country meets Soweto on this interesting hook up.
Long revered by electronic musicians in Europe and North America as the godfather of the mesmerically rhythmic and original South African style Shangaan Electro, 2014 has marked the year that Richard “Nozinja” Mthethwa fully crossed over. He signed to venerable electronic institution Warp earlier in the year, and later released ‘Tsekeleke’ on the label in August. Now he’s fully taking the plunge via an unexpected joint effort with Tessela – premiered on Mary Anne Hobbs’ 6Music show last week. As Hobb’s explains whilst intro’ing the below clip, ‘Wa Chacha’ was made after the two producers met ,”one dark rainy night in London”, discussed their production methods and then retreated to Tessela’s studio to work together. Combining sparse drum programming with Nozinja singing the titular refrain, you can hear Tessela’s version of ‘Wa Chacha’ is set to see release on Bleep at an as yet uncomfirmed date.
