‘Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession’, a 200 page coffee table book by Drum Machine collector Joe Mansfield, is set to be released this December.
Featuring 75 drum machines from Mansfield’s personal collection, the book includes more than 200 photos by photographer Gary Land as well as a foreword by author and record collector Dave Tompkins. Mansfield began his extraordinary collection with the TR-808 in 1986, which he picked up as a tool for the Hip-Hop production he was engaged in at the time, and now sits at around 150 machines. The photos of these machines form the basis of the book and each one is accompanied by background info from Mansfield himself, as well as interviews with master drum machine programmers and innovators including Davy DMX, Schoolly-D, Marshall Jefferson and Roger Linn.
With Mansfield’s collection consisting of machines from the 1950’s up to the late 80’s, the book’s focus on them is an insight into equipment that has been used on hits by everyone from Kraftwerk to Prince.
