East London up-and-comer HAAi to take over Saturday nights in Brixton for the indefinite future.
Alongside the announcement of their autumn programme – which features Benji B, DJ Bone and Gilles Peterson – Brixton nightclub Phonox have announced rising east London talent HAAi as the DJ who’ll be taking the reins of their Saturday night residency from Jasper James starting October 8.
Although she has a relatively small profile at the moment, HAAi has been holding down a residency at Dalston’s Ridley Road Market Bar for the past two years, having first started collecting mostly African and Turkish records before developing a deep and nuanced understanding of the dance music she displays in her sets. Speaking on the residency, HAAi said: “I couldn’t be more excited to take on this residency and become a part of the Phonox family… I can’t wait to bring a taste of my previous residency at Ridley Road Market Bar in Dalston to Brixton. Although I know they are pretty big shoes to fill, I can’t wait to take the reins”.
Phonox head booker Andy Peyton had this to say: “I first heard about HAAi from Joe Coghill (music manager), who was saying he’d heard this girl play and it was like listening to Optimo. HAAi warmed up at Phonox on 2 consecutive weeks, and both times different promotions managers texted me along the lines of ‘Oh my god who is this DJ, she is amazing’. That’s when we took notice and starting paying regular visits to Ridley Road to check her out. In terms of DJs earning an opportunity I can’t think of a better candidate and can’t wait for her to get started.”
HAAi will begin her residency at Phonox on Saturday 8th October. Check out the full autumn listing below.
