Former Hyp mix contributor performs in new Resident Advisor video.

Soulful R&B singer-songwriter Andrew Ashong, the second artist to feature in our Waxing Lyrical series at The Vinyl Library, rose to prominence as a result of his collaboration with Theo Parrish. Their track ‘Flowers’ captured the essence of, and became the soundtrack to the summer of 2012. Released on Parrish’s Sound Signature imprint, the song won ‘Track of the Year’ at Gilles Peterson‘s Worldwide Awards in 2013. Since then, the British-Ghanian singer-songwriter has gone on to release a self-titled EP with Which Way Records to critical acclaim. Unleashed in January, the EP received praise from publications such as The Guardian, Fact Magazine, Pitchfork and Resident Advisor.

It’s the latter of these four that has presented us with a treat today in the form of an eight-minute live performance from Ashong, accompanied by a three-piece band. The live rendition of ‘Never Dreamed’ sees Ashong and co performing an uptempo interpretation, utilising a live drum machine whilst relinquishing the funk, swing, and sparse processed vocals of the original. A more forthright, directly melodic approach is deployed, resulting in a wonderfully soulful, highly emotive and sincere version of the track. The full performance can be streamed below.
