Anderson .Paak discusses his work with Dr. Dre, and why Flying Lotus is like a monk.
Having kick-started the WeTalkMusic series with Ninja Tune mainstay Bonobo in episode one, and Domino’s leftfield pop talent Julia Holter in episode two, WeTransfer have just unleashed their third instalment, which features west coast hip-hop and funk peddler Anderson .Paak and Baltimore-born DJ and producer Ge-ology.
Anderson .Paak burst into mainstream consciousness with his appearance on Dr. Dre’s 2015 album Compton, and has had a stellar run this year having unleashed the excellent Malibu in January. Ge-ology has worked with the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott and De La Soul, and dropped Moon Circuitry / Escape On The Lodge Freeway on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature imprint last year.
Again the podcast is hosted by Boiler Room’s Thris Tian, and was recorded live at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival in the south of France. Listen below as the pair discuss Flying Lotus, Theo Parrish, Dr. Dre, the impact of Gilles Peterson’s curatorial talent, and record digging in the digital age. You can also hear track appearances from Byron The Aquarius, ‘Re-Run’ from Kamasi Washington’s 2015 album The Epic and Anderson .Paak’s collaboration with Kaytranada on 99.9%.
