Hyp 161: Severn Beach

The man born James Fox debuted his killer Techno alias, Severn Beach, early last year with an EP for Amsterdam-based label Audio Culture, with this new identity allowing him to present new styles of music to the world, music he considers to be his best work to date. On the recent ‘We Continue’ EP, Fox executes the whole affair with sophisticated levels of restraint, finding that hypnotic sweet-spot between Deep House and Techno that lures you into a state of devotion.

Following the release of his latest EP for Audio Culture it felt like a good time pull him in for a Hyp Mix. Fox has delivered a selection of peak-time Techno that doesn’t worry itself with subtlety and restraint. When discussing the mix he highlighted the intention to recreate that overwhelming feeling music can create in a club, where relentless low-end frequencies pick you up and kick you around like a football. Unlike the norm in Techno, where most sets are progressive and gradually harden up, the energy levels of Hyp 161 remain consistent throughout.

If you’re into the bass-driven sounds of Gerd’s Literon moniker, the brute force of Clouds and Head High or the stripped-back hypnotism of Matthewdavid, you’ll appreciated this.
