Dropping the 160th Hyp mix this week is Seattle’s Joey Butler, best known as Kid Smpl. Only 22 years old, Butler has attended the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy and already has one full length, last year’s hazy ‘Skylight’ album, under his belt, leading him to have a confidence in his sound and ability that many 22 year olds are some years off achieving. With an aesthetic that sounds like the mid-point between Burial’s rain-swept urban vignettes and Codeine-drenched strains of U.S. Hip-Hop, Butler utilizes melody in everything he does, but only in the most distorted and treated ways imaginable.
Blessing us with a number of his own personal edits for this mix, including a nicely slowed down version of Burial’s recent ‘Come Down To Us, Butler traverses a number of genres yet keeps his personality intact throughout. Flipping a number of much heard artists and delivering them through his own perspective, Hyp 160 is nothing if not distinct and fascinating.
