Best known as Throwing Snow, Ross Tones has spent the majority of 2013 supporting the likes of Bonobo and Thom Yorke on tour and releasing with his collaborative project Snow Ghosts, under which he put out this year’s ethereal wonder of an album ‘A Small Murmuration’ on Houndstooth. That project, in tandem with vocalist Augustus Ghost, saw Tones’ electronic inclinations take somewhat of a backseat in pursuit of sounds hitherto unexplored, touching on folk, goth and noise with modern pulses of experimental hip-hop, house and footwork. Now to round off the year Tones is launching a new alias, Alight, returning to Tom Lea’s Local Action, on which he released 2011’s ‘Too Polite’, for the ‘Iridis’ EP. A manic fusion of Jungle and Techno that sits as one of the year’s most thrilling tributes to the former genre, it finds Tones with his sights aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Grab the record here.
Providing us with the first mix under his new moniker Tones delivered a selection in three distinct suites. Beginning with ground shaking noise from Roly Porter (who remixes Snow Ghosts’ ‘And The World Was Gone’), Randomer and himself as Alight, then shifting into DnB from the likes of dBridge, Tones rounds things off with a slew of darkened eyes-down tracks from Indigo, Akkord and others.
