YouTube Sessions: Kiasmos

Kiasmos is a collaborative project between virtuoso Icelandic Modern/Classical composer Òlafur Arnalds and the genius behind Bloodgroup, Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands. Hailing from very different musical backgrounds, their joint progression into electronic music has been a deep and ongoing transformation. They first became musically involved when Òlafur worked as a sound engineer for Janus’ group a few years back. The pair discovered that they had a shared passion for minimal and experimental Techno. Both working on their individual projects, Janus doing his thing touring with Bloodgroup and Òlafur scoring music for the screen, (he has just won a BAFTA for his work on the Broadchurch television series) they usually share a long-distance production method. Janus the established producer crafts the initial beats and framework of the tracks which he then sends to Òlafur with his masterful ear for timeless melody, he crafts the finished product.

Having released two EP’s to date, Kiasmos are currently busy in the studio preparing for their debut album which should be out on Erased Tapes later this year. What better time than now to recruit Ólafur and Janus to give us a run through the top YouTube videos proving inspirational to them for their work in progress. Scroll on for FKA Twigs in a forest, a snippet from Sufjan Stevens’ latest project and some straight-up badness from Antwon…

Òlafur Arnalds

FKA Twigs – Hide

So sexy, and no I’m not talking about the lady.

Sisyphus – Take Me

Lon Lux, Serengeti, Sufjan…dream team!

Wid Beasts – Wanderlust

We love the production of this. Especially those crazy pitch effects in the end. The whole album is great.

Spooky Black – Without You

I actually really love this song. I’m lucky to have first heard it on SloundCloud as i’m not sure if I could have taken it seriously if I had seen the video right away. Now I think the video just adds to the greatness of this. It’s ok to be clichéd if you’re sincere.

Antwon – Dying in the Pussy

This video has been very influential on us, especially during the production of our current album. JUST LISTEN TO THAT FAT KICK.

Janus Rasmussen

Canned Heat – Poor Moon

This song gets me every time. What messed up lyrics!

Stimming – November

Stimming proving that it’s possible to make very deep and moving music. The production is so smooth.

Darkside – Paper Trails

This track has such a nice vibe to it. Really nice guitar playing going on.

Modeselektor – Shipwreck

Modeselektor and Thom Yorke, where could it possibly go wrong? Crazy video as well.
