YouTube Sessions: HAAi

Teneil Throssell, better known as East London based DJ and producer HAAi, first cut her teeth as a resident at Dalston’s Ridley Road Market, collecting mostly African and Turkish records before developing a deep and nuanced understanding of the dance music she displays in her sets.

After impressing with consecutive warm up sets for Brixton’s Phonox, the club proposed she follow Jasper James’ residency, where since last October she has taken centre stage every Saturday with extended sets that span house, disco and rarities from around the world.

Recently holding her Coconut Beats parties at the club, HAAi has hosted the likes of Moscoman, Daniel Avery, Optimo, Auntie Flo and Chaos in the CBD. Now expanding the imprint to that of a label, HAAi follows up her first single ‘DaDaDa‘ with ‘Be Good‘, a more electronica-based affair full of rich textures that sees HAAi put her own dreamy vocals to work.

Ahead of its release, we asked HAAi to compile her festival fail safe tunes, drawing for the likes of Rebolledo, KiNK, Radio Slave and Loleatta Holloway. Check below.

1. Rebolledo – Meet Me at TopazDeluxe ‘Super Vato’

Rebolledo has a way with chugs. This track has really smashed for me this summer, The vocal, the drum fills, the wood block… the whole thing is so dark and vibey.

2. UNIT 2 – Sunshine (KiNK Remix)

This is an undeniably danceable banger! I’m sure it would have been one of the biggest festival tunes of the year with the constantly building piano riff to the rolls g claps, it’s never let me down on the dance floor.

3. Radio Slave – Children Of The E (Kink SP1200 Mix)

With a super hypnotic drum loop followed by some wonderfully distorted fills, this track almost blew the roof off the tent at sunfall. It’s a biggie. Also, lets face it, this list could have been filled with just Kink remixes, but we’re smarter than that.

4. Floorplan – Let The Church

The simplicity of this track really blows me away. Such a tough repetitive techno beat accentuated only by some rising claps then abruptly drops into a screeching gospel vocal. I can’t get enough of this track right now.

5. Dionigi – Energy From The Vacuum (Maceo Plex Edit)

This track is mega, it’s got a beautiful almost dark disco intro and rolls into a a dance floor banger with all the tension you need to get any tent into a frenzy.

6. Manfredas – Glasswalk

Man I love everything about this tune. Has all the melon twisting elements I just love as well as a super eastern feel to it. When those swirling guitars come in towards the end…This tune gets me every damn time!

7. Anton Pieete – Peven

Because you can’t just play all the bangers at a festival. This track with its wonky synths and shepherds tone running through the entire track is truly mind melting. I love it.

8. Loleatta Holloway – Love Sensation (acapella)

This is a special one for the right moment… trust meh.

9. Emmanuel Jal – Kuar (Henrik Schwarz remix)

This list wouldn’t be complete without some coconut beats…. when the chorus vocal comes in on this… woof

10. HAAi – DaDaDa

C’mooooon…. ya gotta 😉
